Zeta Pi History
THe pearls - 1969
On February 28, 1969, seven young men stood outside of Memorial Hall and waited to begin a journey that would have an immeasurable impact on the campus of the University of Georgia and on the landscape of Black Greek Letter organizations across the southern United States. Eddie Cheeks, Alan Jackson, Richard Morgan, Bennie Roberson, Michael Stover, Russell Williams and Alonzo Wilson were picked up and taken to the F.C. Maddox Center located on Magnolia Street in Athens, GA and initiated into the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Sphinx Club. This effort was being directed by the local Alpha graduate chapter, Eta Iota Lambda.
Brother Walter W. Ware, Jr. (’60 Gamma Gamma, Allen University) was a graduate student at the University of Georgia and was given the responsibility of being the Dean of Pledges for the Sphinxman pledge class. Additionally, Brother David H. Nunnally, Sr. (’54 Gamma Phi, Tuskegee Institute) was critically influential in organizing and championing the charter of an Alpha chapter on the campus of UGA.
In 1967, Eta Iota Lambda president, James L. Holston (’60 Gamma Zeta, Ft. Valley State College), drafted a petition to the Alpha Regional Vice President to charter a chapter on the campus of the University of Georgia, the states flagship institution.
The petition created great interest as well as some concern from students, campus administrators and the fraternity’s National Organization about the safety and wellbeing of interested candidates. As the word spread, an interest group of 16 perspective candidates formed. Because of the concern for safety and the hesitancy to greenlight the effort on a fraternity and university level, the pace of the initiative slowed and many of the 16 were not able to continue.

Zeta Pi ALUMNI association
est. 1996
The Zeta Pi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has an incredible history of its brothers holding numerous leadership roles throughout the University of Georgia. With these seeds planted, the brothers discussed ways to formally cement an alumni association in which brothers could continue to have a leadership impact at the University of Georgia and serve as an additional resource to the current Zeta Pi undergraduates.
At the Zeta Pi 27th Reunion (1996), brothers returned to Athens, GA. where Bro. Gabriel Fortson served as President of the Zeta Pi Chapter. At this reunion the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. made an official decision to form the Zeta Pi Alumni Association. The elected officers were Bro. Hamilton Holmes, Jr. (President), Bro. Eric Chaney (Treasurer) and Bro. Michael Ward, Esq. (Secretary). Since the establishment of the Zeta Pi Alumni Association, brothers have continued to give back to the University of Georgia through scholarship funding, mentorship of current students, and social engagements such as UGA Homecoming.
